Spinal Muscular Atrophy - SMA
What is SMA?
Spinal Muscular Atrophy is a genetic disease affecting the part of the nervous system that controls voluntary muscle movement.
Atrophy...
is the medical term for getting smaller. Tissues can get smaller by reducing the size of the cells or decreasing the overall number of cells along with, but in some cases even without, changes in the cellular structure.
Appearance
SMA is a rare disease rather widespread. Indeed, about 1 in 6000 infants suffers from SMA and 1 in 40 people carries the disease.
Our main concern
Despite the high number of people suffering from SMA, many people do not know the disease. Therefore, we aim at reducing this gap providing first of all information about SMA and, more important, also offering support to the patients and their relatives. Indeed, daily living aids are often very expensive.
